Texas Fly Fishing Journal

Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 25, 2026 · Version 2.3

1. Introduction

Texas Fly Fishing Journal ("we", "us", or "our") is a fishing log app built for Texas anglers. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your personal information when you use our app and website at texasflyfishingjournal.com. By using the app, you agree to this policy.

2. Data We Collect

We collect only the data necessary to provide the app's features:

  • Email address (for sign-in and support)
  • Photos you upload for fish identification or length estimation
  • GPS coordinates at the moment you log a catch (used to match to a water body — see Section 8)
  • Catch logs: species, length, weight, notes, gear used
  • Trip information: water, date, duration, notes
  • AI-generated Pattern Insights: the patterns and recommendations produced from your catch history are stored in your account (Pro feature)
  • Subscription status (managed by Stripe, RevenueCat, Apple, or Google depending on purchase method)
  • App usage events: page views, feature interactions, onboarding steps, and upgrade funnel (collected via PostHog — see Section 7)
  • Basic device information (browser/OS, included automatically in support emails)

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect any of the following — ever:

  • Phone contacts or address book
  • SMS or call logs
  • Microphone or audio recordings
  • Background location (location is only accessed when you explicitly log a catch)
  • Advertising identifiers or tracking IDs
  • Biometric data
  • Payment card numbers (Stripe, Apple, and Google handle all payment processing — we never see your card)

4. We Do Not Sell or Share Your Data

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes. Your data is used only to operate and improve the app.

5. Why We Collect It

  • Fish identification — AI analysis of photos you submit
  • Fish length estimation — AI analysis of photos you submit
  • Pattern Insights — AI analysis of your aggregated catch and trip records to surface personalized fishing patterns (Pro feature)
  • AI Trip Planner — AI processing of your target species, date, and regional context to generate water recommendations and fly suggestions (Pro feature)
  • Habitat classification — matching your location to known Texas waters
  • Syncing your data across devices
  • Managing your subscription
  • Responding to support requests
  • Understanding how the app is used so we can improve it

6. Who We Share Your Data With

We share data only with the following service providers, who process it on our behalf:

  • Supabase — database, authentication, and photo storage (hosted on AWS in the United States)
  • Stripe — subscription billing and payment processing for web purchases
  • RevenueCat — in-app purchase management for iOS and Android
  • Apple — payment processing for App Store in-app purchases
  • Google — payment processing for Google Play in-app purchases
  • SendGrid — transactional email delivery (support replies, account notifications)
  • OpenAI — AI fish species identification via GPT-4o (photos are submitted for analysis via our secure backend and are not retained by OpenAI)
  • Anthropic — AI processing via Claude for several features: (1) fish length estimation from photos, (2) Pattern Insights generation from your aggregated catch and trip text data, (3) AI Trip Planner recommendations, (4) AI Trip Debrief summaries, (5) the Waterbody Matchmaker ("Find a Spot Now"), (6) AI Gear Suggestions, and (7) automated moderation of photos you submit to the public leaderboard. All requests are made through our secure backend. Anthropic does not retain submitted data or use it to train its models.
  • PostHog — behavioral analytics (app usage events and usage patterns, processed in the United States)

7. Analytics (PostHog)

We use PostHog, a third-party analytics service based in the United States, to understand how the app is used. The following types of events are collected:

  • Page views and in-app navigation
  • Authentication events (sign-in, sign-out, account creation)
  • Onboarding progress steps
  • Feature usage (catch logging, AI identification, length estimation, Pattern Insights, AI Trip Planner)
  • Upgrade and subscription funnel events

Analytics events are associated with your account email address and subscription status (free or Pro). This data is used solely to improve the app — it is not used for advertising or sold to any third party. You may contact us to request deletion of your analytics data.

Session Replay

PostHog also records a sample of in-app sessions (session replay) so we can diagnose bugs and understand where the experience is confusing. A replay captures your taps, navigation, and the on-screen content of the app's web interface during that session. We use it as follows:

  • A small percentage of all sessions are recorded at random (ambient sampling)
  • Sessions where you encounter repeated frustration or an error are recorded so we can investigate
  • Sessions that include high-value pages (such as the Upgrade screen) are recorded to help us fix checkout issues

All text inputs are masked in replays, so what you type is not captured. Native payment screens (Apple, Google, and Stripe checkout) run outside the app's web interface and are never recorded — we never see your card details. Replays are processed by PostHog in the United States, are used solely to improve the app, and are never sold or used for advertising. You may contact us to request deletion of your replay data.

8. Location Data

When you log a catch, the app uses your device's GPS to determine your approximate location. This location is matched to a known Texas water body, and the water body name is stored with your catch record. Catch coordinates are stored with your catch and are visible only to you. If you opt into the public leaderboard, only the water body name is shown publicly, never your coordinates.

Location is accessed only at the moment you actively log a catch. The app does not track your location in the background. If you decline location permission, you can still log catches by manually selecting a water body.

9. Leaderboard & Publicly Visible Data

The app includes an optional public leaderboard. Participation is entirely voluntary. If you choose to opt in:

  • Your display name, catch species, catch length, and catch photo are visible to all app users
  • Your leaderboard entries are stored on our servers and accessible via a public CDN

You can opt out of the leaderboard at any time in Settings. When you opt out, your entries are removed from the public leaderboard. If you delete your account, all leaderboard data is also permanently deleted.

10. Offline Data Storage

When you log catches without an internet connection, your data is saved locally on your device using SQLite. This data syncs to our servers automatically when you reconnect. The local copy is managed by the app and is not accessible to other apps on your device.

11. Data Residency

Your data is stored on servers located in the United States. If you are accessing the app from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States.

12. Data Retention

We retain your data only while your account is active. When you delete your account, all personal data — including catches, trips, gear, and photos — is permanently removed from our systems within 30 days. Backups containing deleted data are purged automatically within 30 days.

13. Payment Processor Records

Stripe, Apple, and Google retain minimal records (such as a customer ID and transaction history) for tax and anti-fraud compliance purposes as required by law. RevenueCat retains purchase records to manage entitlements across platforms. None of these records contain your catches, photos, or personal journal data.

14. How to Delete Your Data

You can delete individual records (such as a single catch, trip, spot, gear item, or fly) at any time without deleting your account — just open the item in the app and use its Delete option.

To delete your account and all associated data, use the Delete My Account button in Settings → Legal & Privacy, or email support@texasflyfishingjournal.com with the subject "Account Deletion Request". Email requests are actioned within 5 days, and all data is permanently removed — including backups — within 30 days. A confirmation email is sent once deletion is complete. For step-by-step instructions, see our Data Deletion page.

15. How We Protect Your Data

  • All data is transmitted over HTTPS
  • Database access is protected by Row-Level Security (RLS) — you can only access your own data
  • Catch photos are stored in private buckets with signed URLs and are not publicly accessible — unless you opt into the public leaderboard, in which case that catch's photo is accessible via a public CDN
  • Authentication uses short-lived access tokens
  • No service stores your data unnecessarily or beyond its stated purpose

16. AI & How It Uses Your Data

The app uses AI for several features. All AI requests are made through our secure backend (Supabase Edge Functions) — your data is never sent directly from your device to an AI provider. None of the providers below retain your data or use it to train their models.

Fish Species Identification — OpenAI GPT-4o

  • Your photo is sent to OpenAI's API for analysis
  • A species suggestion with a confidence indicator is returned
  • The photo is not retained by OpenAI and is not used to train its models

Fish Length Estimation — Anthropic Claude

  • Your photo is sent to Anthropic's API for analysis
  • An estimated length is returned
  • The photo is not retained by Anthropic and is not used to train its models

Pattern Insights — Anthropic Claude (Pro)

  • When you generate insights, a summary of your catch and trip records is sent to Anthropic's API — specifically: species names, catch lengths, dates, water body names, and flies used
  • No photos, no email address, and no exact GPS coordinates are included in this request
  • AI-generated patterns and recommended actions are returned and stored in your account
  • Anthropic does not retain this data or use it to train its models

AI Trip Planner — Anthropic Claude (Pro)

  • When you use the Trip Planner, your target species, target date, and a list of nearby water bodies (names and types) are sent to Anthropic's API
  • No photos, no email address, and no exact GPS coordinates are included in this request
  • AI-generated water rankings, confidence ratings, and fly suggestions are returned in real-time and are not stored on our servers
  • Anthropic does not retain this data or use it to train its models

AI Trip Debrief — Anthropic Claude (Pro)

  • When you generate a debrief for a trip, a summary of that trip's catch and gear records is sent to Anthropic's API — specifically: species names, catch lengths, dates and times, water body names, and flies and gear used
  • No photos, no email address, and no exact GPS coordinates are included in this request
  • An AI-generated trip summary is returned and stored with that trip
  • Anthropic does not retain this data or use it to train its models

Waterbody Matchmaker ("Find a Spot Now") — Anthropic Claude

  • When you ask for a spot, the names and types of nearby water bodies, their approximate distance from you, and current USGS streamflow data are sent to Anthropic's API
  • No photos, no email address, and no exact GPS coordinates are included in the request — your location is used only on our backend to find nearby waters and compute distances
  • AI-generated water recommendations are returned in real time and are not stored on our servers
  • Anthropic does not retain this data or use it to train its models

AI Gear Suggestion — Anthropic Claude

  • When you request a gear suggestion, your gear inventory, target species, and current conditions are sent to Anthropic's API
  • No photos, no email address, and no exact GPS coordinates are included in the request
  • AI-generated gear recommendations are returned in real time
  • Anthropic does not retain this data or use it to train its models

Leaderboard Photo Moderation — Anthropic Claude

  • When you submit a catch to the public leaderboard, the catch photo is sent to Anthropic's API for automated moderation (to detect fraudulent or inappropriate images)
  • This applies only to photos you choose to submit to the public leaderboard — photos kept private are never sent for moderation
  • The photo is not retained by Anthropic and is not used to train its models

What none of these AI services do:

  • Do not retain your data beyond the scope of processing the individual request
  • Do not use your data to train their models
  • Do not store your photos outside your own account
  • Do not share your data with other users or third parties
  • Do not receive your email address, exact GPS coordinates, or payment information

Important: All AI-generated outputs — including species identifications, length estimates, pattern insights, and trip recommendations — may be incorrect. Never rely solely on AI output for decisions related to harvest, wildlife reporting, or regulatory compliance. You are solely responsible for compliance with applicable fishing regulations.
